If you suffer from sun sensitivity, then you know the value of a good hat. Not only do they need to protect your head, face, and neck; but you also want style. And that’s what you get with these 5 best women’s sun protective hats.
I know- you’re probably thinking, what does a man know about women’s hats? And, I promised that I only promote products that I’ve tried out.
So, to squash any doubts, I didn’t try these out. My teenage daughters did. You see, once I began suffering from lupus photosensitivity, my daughters joined in my safety precautions for solidarity.
So, they wear sun protective clothing when out and about, too. Anyways, I bought sun hats and had them try them out for me.
And, these five were their favorites.

What To Look For in The Best Women’s Sun Protective Hat
Before I tell you about my top 5 picks, let me tell you what you should be looking for in a sun protective hat. These factors help determine how protection your hat will provide you. And as you know, good sun protection is vital for individuals suffering from sun sensitivity.
I should know- I suffer from lupus photosensitivity.
For more about lupus sun sensitivity, read my post- Lupus Sun Sensitivity- Don’t Feel Like a Vampire.
And, from my own experience, I’ve discovered that your sun protective hat should:
- carry a UPF of 50+ – that will block out 98% of UVA and UVB rays
- have a brim of 3″ or more
- be made from a material that’s tightly woven, yet breathable- straw, raffia, cotton, hemp, polyester, or nylon
- have a brim that’s pointed down- to deflect UV rays bounced back from surfaces beneath you
Other than that, it’s a matter of style. And, sun protective hats don’t have to be ugly.
And these 5 best women’s sun protective hats are far from ugly.
So, here they are.
Okay, so right off the bat, I have to admit that this hat looks cute on my girls (Now, I might be a little biased- maybe just a little. And, I have to admit that Coolibar is a house favorite. I have a couple of their men’s hats (so I do know about sun hats in general).
Here’s the perks:
- 100% polyester- so it’s cool on your head
- UPF 50+
- Travel friendly- packable and crushable
- Variety of colors to choose from
- Stays on when windy
Okay, so in complete honesty, here’s some drawbacks: it’s one size and it’s not washable. Yet, it can be wiped clean with a cloth. As for it only coming in one size, if your head size is a medium, you’ll be fine. If you have a larger head, yeah… I’m going to leave that alone.
Overall, my daughters were impressed with the protection they received while looking cute wearing it (They made me add that last part. I swear).
Moving on to the next pick.
With this hat, the girls were digging the floppy brim. And, that’s saying something. They’re usually not fans of straw hats, but they’re into this one. That’s because the brim didn’t fall in their faces.
With this hat, you get:
- 2 sizes- medium and large
- Adjustable inner band for better fit
- Adjustable/ removable chin strap (helps with the wind)
- 4″ brim
- 100% paper straw that’s tightly woven
- UPF 50+
- Packable- foldable or roll it up
- Great price
Unfortunately, a drawback exists- It only comes in khaki or beige and various mixes of the two.
Honestly, as a guy I would be okay with that, but my daughters insisted that I point this out, as well.
Now, my daughters made a face at first with this hat (they’re also teenagers). Of course, it’s because of the neck flap. They’ve never been a fan of them. That is, until they burned the back of their neck one time.
But, after the initial face, once they wore this hat they gave rave reviews.
The reasons for the great feedback:
- The neck drape is actually comfortable (In their words, it doesn’t “bug them when lying back in a deck chair”.)
- It has a ponytail hole
- Wide, heavier brim
- UPF 50+
- Buitl-in sweatband
- Removable chinstrap
- Comfortable to wear
- Complete head protection- covers your head, face, and neck
But, the downside- this hat is more for function than fashion. It’s not a bad style compared to some sun protective hats, yet it’s not at the top of the list for style.
Yet, it’s still a popular hat because of the amount of protection it provides. Incidentally, it’s great for gardening.
Here’s another cute style according to my teenagers. In addition to style, it also provides you with great sun protection.
This hat comes with:
- UPF 50+
- 2 sizes
- Adjustable inside band to further help with sizing
- Wide brim that can be manipulated
- Travelability- fold it or roll it up
- It’s machine washable on gentle cycle
- Detachable chinstrap
- Cotten/ linen blend
- Protection for your face
- Ponytail hole
- Variety of colors
As I said, my daughters were impressed with the style. Also, they loved the color choices. By the way, I let them pick out the colors they wanted when I bought these 5 best women’s sun protective hats to try out. Of course, they got to keep the hats, so this experiment was a win-win situation. I found my guinea pigs, and they got clothes!
Out of all these 5 best women’s sun protective hats, my girls loved this one the most. And, of course it costs the most! Even with saying that, it’s still affordable. If you’ve researched sun protection hats, you know the cost can get high.
But, you get what you pay for.
And with this hat, this is what you get:
- 10 colors to choose from
- Packable- it rolls up
- 4 1/2″ brim
- Hand washable
- 100% polyester
- Internal drawstring
And, now for the downside- It doesn’t come with a chinstrap (according to my girls, that’s a plus for them).
While the Scrunchie only comes in one size, Walleroo does offer a smaller model called the Petite Scrunchie if you have a smaller head size.
As for style, my daughters fell in love with this hat. They love that it goes with so many of their outfits. Matter of fact, for my 17 year old, it’s her go-to hat.
The Best Women’s Sun Hats are Functional and Stylish
As you can see, with these hats you don’t have to give up style for function. Yes, you need a good sun protective hat when out and about. Especially, if you experience photosensitivity. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t look good doing it.
I (and my daughters) hope you enjoyed this post. If so, please share it with others. Sun protection is important.
Wishing you better days ahead
